Wilmington – Homegirls is the resulting exhibition of a one-week residency at Slanguage by the Chicana collective from San Antonio Texas, Mas Rudas who will be on residency at Slanguage from August 1st-September 8th. The exhibition will be a large-scale installation that will examine and reflect on the complex sister-hood relationships that the term Homegirls refers to between and among women. As part of their residency, Mas Rudas collective will lead a panel discussion and an educational workshop with Slanguage’s youth.
This is the second exhibition as part of the Slanguage residency program, SLANGAIR (Artist in Residency), which annually invites artists from Wilmington, from California, including one from Los Angeles, a national artist, and an international artist to the studio. During their time at Slanguage, each artist builds a body of work to show at the studio’s gallery space and may or may not include teaching a workshop and leading a lecture or panel discussion.

Slanguage members have started a historical touring component of Los Angeles. Interested in history and stories, Slanguage members are on an archeological road to digging historical parts of our own loved city. Once a month, on a sunday, we meet to tour a different part of the city of Los Angeles. Sunday June 6th, 2010 was the first. Slanguage members met at the famous Belmont Shore Apartments built where the Graffiti yard “Belmont” and once a train yard for the city in the 1940′s used to be. We then headed to the historical part of Pico Union founded in 1781, which is the neighborhood that surrounds the intersection of Pico Boulevard and Union Ave. We started our tour at the Pico Union Library and toured a couple of historical houses and churches including the Alvarado Terrace area which was the site of the city’s first round golf course in 1897. Along the way we found more than the beauty of the old, decaying architecture. We found virgin Mary’s on roofs, trees, backyards and a couple of kid’s toys, mops hanging on tree limps, disposed shopping carts, make-shift vendor carts, and recycled auto parts. Come and join us next month as we explore East Los Angeles along the Gold Metro Line on Sunday July 11, 2010!

From 2 p.m. till 4 p.m– Alonso Garzon will be leading a Hat Workshop with Slanguage members Karla Diaz, Shonowa Villalobos, and Mario Ybarra Jr. asking audiences to use recycled materials to build their hats in the same way Simon Rodia the creator of the famous Watts Towers did out of recycled materials. Slanguage is preparing to have an exhibition next summer at LACMA titled “Possible Worlds” in collaboration with the Watts House Project. Come and join them, design and build your own custom hat to wear!
